Designing Your Scenting System
How to Choose the Right Scent Delivery System
If you only listen to one thing on scent delivery, make it this podcast. We unpack the real differences between SensoryCo scent delivery options, explain what works in different environments, and share practical insight from years of real-world experience. It’s long — but packed with useful information.
Selecting the right scent system depends on more than just the size of a space. Factors such as audience proximity, delivery timing, control method, airflow, and environment all influence performance. Whether scent is triggered or continuous, subtle or immersive, each variable plays a role in how effectively fragrance is experienced.
SensoryCo systems are engineered to adapt to a wide range of applications, —from close-proximity interactions to large-scale environments. With flexible control options and the ability to deliver scent precisely where and when it’s needed, each system can be configured to match the technical and experiential goals of your project. Use the chart below as a guide to identify the best-fit system.
Scent Design Matters
Scent does not behave like light or sound—it moves, dissipates, and competes with other aromas in the environment. While scent is perceived almost immediately, its intensity naturally fades over time. This makes both delivery method and timing critical.
A well-designed scent strategy considers how subtle or pronounced the experience should be, how often scent is introduced, and how it interacts with surrounding conditions. In many cases, the design approach is just as important as the hardware itself. Before finalizing your system, consult with our scent design team to ensure optimal performance.
Explanation of Chart
Proximity to Audience
The relationship to participants is a determining factor when selecting a system. Some applications—such as gaming platforms or museum exhibits—require close-up interactions, where the audience is within 1–3 feet (≈1 meter) of the scent source. Moderate proximity typically ranges from 3–10 feet (1–3 meters), while far-distance delivery may originate across larger spaces.
Size of Space
Size of space is closely related to proximity, but not always. This factor primarily refers to the volume of air that needs to be filled. A training simulator is an example of a very small space, a classroom represents a small space, and a theater or concert venue is considered a large space.
Application
Applications are categorized as either Triggered or Ambient. Triggered applications activate scent based on an event, such as a button press, motion detection, or integration with AV or show control systems. Ambient applications provide a continuous or cycling scent presence.
Environment
There are key differences between indoor and outdoor (or semi-enclosed) environments. Variables such as temperature, air exchange, and airflow patterns all affect scent performance. Proper systems layout is essential for outdoor use.
Control
SensoryCo systems offer a range of control options, from simple manual on/off operation to relay control and full DMX integration for synchronized show environments.
Time On
Most triggered applications operate in short bursts, but this varies by use case. Limited time typically ranges from a few seconds to a few minutes per cycle. Moderate duration spans several minutes, while long-duration applications may run for hours at a time.
Delivery
Most SensoryCo systems use dry air delivery (non-atomized scent). The SMXT1 is the exception, utilizing ultra-fine, sub-micron atomization that remains extremely dry while minimizing residue or fallout.
Complementary Technology
Most systems are self-contained and do not require additional equipment. In larger-scale applications—particularly with the SMXT1—distribution methods such as fans or HVAC integration may be recommended to achieve optimal coverage.
